Interview with Cate Masters

Please welcome Cate Masters to Julie’s Book Review. Cate is giving away an ebook of Death Is A Bitch this week. Make sure you check out the rafflecopter to the right of this page!

Welcome Cate! It is awesome that you have come to visit JBR. My readers at looking forward to hearing all about you!
Thanks so much for having me, Julie! It’s great to be here. I look forward to hearing from your readers too. :)

Let's start with, tell us a little about yourself? Besides being a wonderful author!
Aw, you’re too sweet – thanks. :) Tucked away in the rolling hills of central Pennsylvania with my hubby, I lead a boring life on weekdays, but nights and weekends, my imagination takes over and it can be a pretty wild ride!
Catch up to me at: Blog: http://catemasters.blogspot.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cate-Masters/89969413736?ref=ts Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2944596.Cate_Masters Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/CateMasters

What kinds of books to do write?
The same kind I love to read – mostly fantasy/dark fantasy, paranormal, contemporary and historical, and sometimes mainstream. The genre’s not as important to me as great characters and a compelling story. Once an idea sweeps me away and a story begins to take shape, I go with it no matter what the genre might be.

What can we expect from your books? Sex,violence, romance, gore, action, adventure?
My author tag line is: Magic, mayhem and a little romance, which is mostly true, lol. I don’t rule out action and adventure though! And the level of romance depends on the book. For some, I
pump up the heat level to suit the line I’m subbing to, but I don’t always necessarily write romance – sometimes it’s just a good love story.

Your newest release?
Decadent Publishing released Death Is A Bitch in August 2012 (though I have six upcoming releases with them in 2013, woot!) It’s a modern twist on ancient mythology and the legend of King Sisyphus, with Death as a Type-A workaholic, an intelligent heroine with a bit of snark.
Here’s the blurb:
Eternity can suck when it’s all work, work, work. Death harvests souls even when they stack up faster than pancakes in an all-you-can-eat-buffet. No wonder she can’t shed the Grim Reaper rep.
As the patron angel of death and dying, Azrael works closely with Death but is dying for true intimacy. She’s the only immortal who’s ever aroused such powerful emotions in him. One taste of her leaves him needing her like humans need air and food, but will a demon’s lies leave a bad taste?
No one escapes Death – except King Sisyphus. Twice. With the help of Damien the demon, Sisyphus tries again, and she’s determined to have justice. Some say Death’s a bitch, but only when she has to be. But will the price of justice be a broken heart?

Who is your favorite character from one of your stories? Why?
When I’m writing a story, I fall in love with the characters. I have to, or else readers won’t! Later, they’re like wonderful friends I love to revisit. But I can’t ever choose just one favorite!

Would you, if possible, ever want to meet that character?
For Death Is A Bitch, it’s inevitable, actually. I think my parents’ passing influenced the way I wrote Death. She’s tough when she needs to be but compassionate, and has a soft spot for children and seniors. I like to think that when she comes for my soul, she’ll be the beautiful character I invented and not some terrifying specter with a scythe!

What book have you read that touched you deeply? and why? (yours or someone elses)
Gosh, I love so many authors it’s hard to pick out only one. My bookshelves – and now my Kindle – are full! Margaret Atwood, Neil Gaiman and Alice Hoffman are among my early influences.

Are you currently writing anything? Can you give us any hints?
My muse tortures me with too many ideas! I have a holiday novella ready to sub, plus I’ve started the third book in The Goddess Connection series (with the fourth already brewing in my head), and book two of The Vitruvian Man series (Decadent will be releasing book one this year). A few other stories have been on the list waiting (im)patiently lol

Any advice you would like to give aspiring authors?
Read as many books as possible in the genre(s) you write, and keep writing.

How about some fun stuff? Favorite past time activity?
Skydiving and hiking into live volcanoes. Not! lol Though I would love to visit Egypt’s pyramids and Sphinx one day, and ride a camel. :) Ah, so many places on my Bucket List… But these days, I limit my hobbies to photography and reading and chasing the grandboys around.

Favorite animal? Do you have one?
My sweet furry baby, Lily, is the best dog I’ve ever had, and we have an amazing connection. I saw her photograph on a rescue site on the Internet and had to beg them to let me have her because we live in the next state. They eventually relented. :)

Favorite food?
Oo, tiramasu. I never refuse chocolate either.

A favorite book or one you can recommend (not your own)
Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander is a wonderful mix of time travel and historical Highlander hottie. :)

A favorite author you can recommend and why?
Lately I’ve been hooked on Kelley Armstrong. I love love love her Women of the Otherworld series. She’s actually given me hope that there’s a readership is out there who loves the sort of stories I write.

What kind of music do you listen to?
My musical tastes are pretty eclectic too. I grew up on The Beatles, Stones, Dylan and Donovan, and as rock evolved, so did my preferences. My CD player these days usually has The Black Keys, Wilco, or Eddie Vedder’s Ukelele Songs, but you might also find Norah Jones, Tom Petty or Patty Griffin. That is, if the grandboys haven’t talked me into the Disney hits. :)

Spring, Fall, Winter, Summer? Why?
All of them! Not that I’m evading the question, lol. I love where I live, where the seasons play out every year in changing colors and temperatures. Usually a little past the point where I’m ready for the next one to begin!

  5. Loved your interview, but it made me curious. Is there any genre you like to read that you won't write?

  6. Thanks Maria! No, I've never *not* written in any genre because of a conscious decision against it. I've wanted to try steampunk for a few years, but haven't had the time to read enough in that genre, or research it. Too many WIPs, too little time.
