Amongst Shadows and Thieves
by
Wend Petzler
When
her parents are murdered, Eiry Savoy fakes her own death and takes the
outlaw hood as Lady Thief to seek their killers and learn why the deed
done. She thought nothing could derail her plans until Sir Lucian
Martine, the Butcher of Acre, is given Castle Sanctuary and made
guardian over her little sister by order of Queen Eleanor. Eiry soon
learns man and legend are quite different. Martine is a man most
distracting to her purpose, a man who stirs her heart and makes her
yearn for his touch.
Lucian Martine returns from the Crusades a much changed man, haunted by what deeds he committed during his service to Richard the Lionheart. When Queen Eleanor offers him a new life, he accepts, wishing to retire from war and bloodshed. What he finds at Sanctuary is a child living in a rundown castle with a comely maid and a defiant stable boy. More so, he is surprised when the peasants seek him against Lord William Wendenal, High Sheriff of Derbyshire and Nottingham. Murder and thieves have taken root in the Hope Valley, and he must try to learn who the real villains are and not get killed in the end. In spite of the danger, he is attracted to his ward's maid and begins to feel he is not the Beast consumed with bitterness and anger—hope and redemption could at last be his.
Can a thief, who is determined to save her people and seek vengeance, find a hero in a man rumored to lack a soul, whom the Devil himself fears? Or will her enemies see her betrayed by the very man whose heart she would gladly steal for her own?

Wow.
What an amazing book. It pulled me in from the beginning and held my
attention all the way thru. A lot of history in this book with knights
and kings and crusades. I couldn't believe who turned out to be the
traitor. The ending was a tearjerker..You'll have to read to see what I
mean. I can't wait to read more by this author.
I rate this book 4 1/2 stars
