Paty Jager Day 4

Contemporary Cowboys by Paty Jager

Sometimes a person needs to be pushed to really give their best. That was the case of my first
contemporary western romance book. There was talk of historical westerns being on a down-
trend. I was lamenting to a fellow author and she challenged me to write a contemporary
western. I told her my heart wasn’t in writing contemporary, and I didn’t think I could do it. That
same night while driving home from the writers meeting, I heard something on the radio that
immediately gave me an idea for a contemporary western romance.

A DJ on the radio was talking about how he’d read about a child ordering items online with his
parents’ credit card and they didn’t find out until the items were delivered to the house. I thought
what a great way for a child living in a remote area to get a nanny. And that was how, my award-
winning contemporary romance, Perfectly Good Nanny, came to be. Using that premise, I began
writing a story set on a remote eastern Oregon ranch. With that book doing so well, I tried my
hand at another one. This one dealt with a woman who overcame sexual abuse as a child and her
road to learning to love. It’s titled Bridled Heart. The hero in this book is a rodeo bronc rider and
the heroine is an ER nurse. The story has emotional roller coasters and a heartwarming ending.

Leave a comment and your name will be in the drawing for an ebook of your choice from these
two.

Perfectly Good Nanny blurb:
Juggling a mortgaged ranch, a preteen daughter, and a toddler, Brock Hughes has enough on
his plate. He lost the love of his life to a tragic accident and a second wife to the bright lights of
the city. He doesn't need another woman in his life. Until a beautiful nanny he didn't hire arrives
on his doorstep.
Carina Valencia arrives on Brock’s doorstep determined to pull her life back together. As far
as she's concerned, it doesn't matter who hired her.  These children are clearly in need of a
woman’s touch and she’ll not let another child down.

Bridled Heart blurb:
A specialized placement schedule and self-imposed vow of celibacy keeps ER nurse, Gina
Montgomery, from getting too close to anyone. Music is her only solace and release from a past
laced with abuse. But when that music draws the attention of a handsome rodeo bareback rider,
her chosen solitary life—not to mention her vow—gets tested to the limits.
Holt Reynolds let his younger sister down when she needed him most. With the similarities to
his sister far too evident in Gina, he can’t get the woman out of his head, or her poignant music
out of his heart. But how can he find a way to free her bridled heart before the past resurfaces to
destroy their one chance at happiness?

  1. These two books while a bit easier to research were just as hard to write because they were contemporary and with the internet everyone knows everything these days.

  2. Sometimes mixing story telling up with a new genre is good. Especially in your case, Paty. I've read several of the genres you write in and have enjoyed all the stories! Great post.
