Review of Don't Cross The Countess by Lindsay Downs
Don't Cross The Countess
The
Countess of Modbury is sure that her huband was murdered and it was not
an accident as portrayed. She suspects it has something to do with The
Battle of Waterloo and what he may have uncovered about it. With the
assistance of a man admired by her late husband, and one of his trusted
employees, Keith, she starts to unravel the long kept secret to the
traitors of the Crown. The Countess travels to London and must diguise
herself as someone has made several attempts on her life. She makes a
startling discovery about the man who is helping her and is torn whether
to trust him further. During the investigation she must keep a low
profile until she can prove her case but she unflinchingly moves forward
with her investigation ignoring the warnings of her family and
friends. Unexpectedly, The Countess finds herself caught up in a
sensuous love affair which also endangers the life of the man she is
attracted to.
The
story was well written and kept the reader's attention but was a little
predictable, making it easy to guess the outcome. I thought the
conversation, descriptions of clothing and living conditions brought you
into the time period intended which is something I enjoy. There were
intimate moments between the couple but I felt the overall conversation
between them seemed less than familiar. The story had a good plot with
lots of twists and turns. I would give it 3 stars.
