Architects of Destiny
Cadicle, Volume 1
By
Amy DuBoff
Cristoph (Cris) Sietinen is heir to the SiNavTech dynasty, one of the six leading dynasties on
Tararia who are the joint rulers of commerce and economics throughout Tararian space. Cris,
unhappy with his role as heir, seeks to learn what it feels like to make his own decisions and
experience the world on his own terms. It doesn’t help that he has powers that he does not
understand but that are condemned by the “Priesthood” who are the political rulers of Tararian
space and dismissed by his parents as unimportant.
But Cris is in for some serious lessons in war and politics as he seeks ways to understand and
control his powers and begins to understand that politics stretch far beyond the realm of the
dynasties, and even beyond their conflict with the Priesthood. He also learns that destiny is not
controlled by the hand of those destined and stretches across the breadth time, space and wars.
Amy DuBoff has written a space opera with likeable, believable and truly confused and
conflicted characters. Cris is a rebellious teenager in the midst of people who know more about
him, his abilities and his destiny than he does and who are determined to manipulate him for
their own purposes. However, in rebelling, he is facilitating his own destiny and fulfilling the
goals of those who are manipulating him. He does eventually find supportive friends in Thom
and Scott, and eventually in Kate whose fate is tied to his.
Architect of Destiny is well written and despite a relatively slow start, picks up quickly and is
intriguing and entertaining. Fans of classic science fiction and fantasy, as well as those just
interested in a good read involving political intrigue and action should like it. I plan to read the
rest of the series, Veil of Reality and Bonds of Resolve soon.
